Most car buyers are never aware of the purposes of the components in their vehicles. This explains why some automobile buyers frequently discard certain components after buying a vehicle. After purchasing a car, one of the biggest mistakes consumers make is removing the thermostat. This is due to their perception that it serves no purpose for them.
The thermostat is made to prevent coolant from entering the radiator when the engine is cold until the coolant reaches the thermostat’s intended temperature range. The thermostat then opens, letting heated coolant into the radiator to cool.
The thermostat aids in bringing the engine up to temperature more quickly, preventing the majority of engine wear that happens when the engine is cold. Make that the new thermostat has the same manufacturer’s recommended temperature range as the old one before replacing it.
The thermostat overheats the engine if it is left in the closed position.
The engine runs cold if it’s left in the open position. An engine should never be run without a thermostat. If it breaks, just replace it with an OEM thermostat (not an aftermarket one) and make sure the new thermostat has the same temperature rating as the broken one.
Don’t be tricked into thinking that simply because you live in a warm climatic area, you can remove and discard this guy since he is the gatekeeper of the cooling system. Guys, take good care of your engines! Avoid running an engine without a thermostat because the following will occur:
1. Significant temperature swings in the engine.
2. The engine won’t be able to effectively monitor fuel use and emissions; poor fuel economy is to be expected.
3. Excessive or quicker engine component wear and tear. One example is that engine oil cannot lubricate an engine with significant temperature variations.
