NPT, or nocturnal penile tumescence, is a common occurrence in the lives of many adult males and young men. According to MedicalNewsToday and Healthline, the following are some of the most common reasons men experience erections first thing in the morning.

1. Change in hormone levels.
Your hormones level peaks in the morning. This is at its peak right after you come out of a REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep period. An erection may occur even in the absence of external stimuli if this hormone is increased. While the decline in natural hormones levels often begins between the ages of 40 and 50, it can happen at any moment.
2. Relaxing the mind
When you’re stressed at work, your body produces hormones that make it more difficult to get and maintain an erection. Your body naturally lowers its output of these hormones when you sleep. The NPT theory is strengthened when this is taken into account alongside the other hypothesized causes of a nighttime erection.
3. Exercise
Even with blindfolded eyes, your body is still acutely aware of its immediate environment. You or your partner may have an erection if you touch your reproductive organs. An erection will develop after the stimulation.
In males, NPT can manifest at any age. Nighttime erections are more common in young men because their hormones levels are higher than those of either younger youngsters or older adults. NPT can be given once or twice day to a young adult male typically first thing in the morning.
