During an interview with Arise News, Ene Obi, a government team leader and action aid, faulted President Tinubu for just announcing the fuel subsidy removal without elucidating on the issue.

She stated that he just came and said the subsidy is gone, and now a lot of people are trekking across the country.

She stated that the situation is no longer bearable as both the poor and the rich are suffering from it.

She revealed that she used to fill her tank for N13,000, but now she’s filling it for N40,000.

According to her, “this is not about poor people anymore. You go to a filling station with something you used to fill with N13,000; all of a sudden, you’re paying almost N40,000 to fill your tank, and even some people are paying much more than that, and so we’re having a lot of people trekking across the country right now because of the charges; even the transporters are having difficulties.”

“A cousin of mine called me this evening. I want to travel. I got here. I’m going for an interview. What is happening? The transport fare that they say is N15000, they say I should pay N28,000; you don’t know what to do. So, it’s a whole multiplier effect—how is this going to multiply if you’re not increasing salaries, and so on? So we need to look for other alternatives. We need to look at means; the government cannot just pull up the carpet like that. No discussions at all; you just came and said subsidy. Who is waiting for you?”
