In a recent development,the
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a significant ban on some public transportation systems in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. This announcement came during a meeting with estate developers and centered around two main changes, the introduction of new buses and taxis for public transportation, and the phasing out of tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, particularly in the areas of Asokoro and Maitama.
The primary reason for this ban is to address the persistent issue of “one chance” robberies in Abuja, a type of crime that occurs in public transport where passengers are robbed especially with tricycles. Wike assured that with the new buses and taxis in operation, the problem of “one chance” would significantly diminish, if not disappear entirely.
However, he also warned that citizens should be cautious and avoid using unregistered taxis and buses in Abuja as they could still pose a risk.
Wike emphasized the need for improved security in Abuja stating that some operators who operate tricycles are suspected of being involved in criminal activities. Therefore, removing them from key areas in Abuja is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the safety of residents.
The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) will be responsible for rolling out these new buses and taxis, which are expected to provide a more secure and efficient transportation option for the public. These vehicles will cover all routes in Asokoro and Maitama, aiming to replace Keke Napep in these areas.
Wike acknowledged that this transition might cause some inconvenience but stressed the importance of these changes for the greater good of the community. He called for cooperation from residents and urged them to fulfill their tax obligations to support these initiatives.
While the intent to enhance the transportation system and ensure public safety was clear, Wike did not provide specific details or a timeline for the implementation of these new transportation alternatives, more importantly, the ban of tricycles in Abuja.
