Organised Labour has announced that the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage is expected to begin by the end of August. This was confirmed by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission.
According to Vanguard News, Ndubuaku explained that the slight delay is due to the processes involved, such as the consequential adjustment, which includes calculating the new minimum wage across levels one to 16. He emphasized that the delay is not a deliberate attempt by the Federal or State Governments to avoid paying the new wage.
He stated, “We have no reason to suspect a deliberate delay. Signing the wage is just a small part of the process. The consequential adjustment requires calculating the minimum wage from level one, step one, all the way to level 16. This process takes time, and there is a committee working on it. We expect the adjustments to be completed before the end of the month.”
This comes after President Bola Tinubu signed the N70,000 minimum wage bill into law. However, only a few state governments have implemented the law so far, with others forming committees to begin the process
