According to the Nation, Nigerian Governors Exceed Federal Minimum Wage
In a move to improve the livelihoods of civil servants, several Nigerian governors have pledged to pay above the federal minimum wage of N70,000.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage bill into law in July 2024.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently approved a minimum wage of N85,000 for state government employees.
This decision was reached during a meeting with organized labor representatives at Government House in Port Harcourt.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also announced a minimum wage of N85,000 for state workers, citing the high cost of living in Lagos. Sanwo-Olu aims to further increase the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025.
Other governors have followed suit, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the welfare of civil servants.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State approved a minimum wage of N77,000, while Governor Muhammad Yahaya of Gombe State agreed to pay N71,500.
In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced a minimum wage increase to N73,000 during his campaign kickoff.
Similarly, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo approved N72,500, suspending the tax burden on the approved sum for one year.
These decisions underscore the governors’ recognition of the challenges faced by civil servants and their determination to provide a better quality of life.
As the country navigates economic uncertainties, these moves aim to alleviate the financial burdens on Nigerian workers.
The federal minimum wage law, signed by President Tinubu, concluded months of negotiations between government representatives, labor unions, and the private sector.
While some governors have pledged to meet the N70,000 minimum wage, others have gone above and beyond, demonstrating their commitment to the welfare of their employees.
