The Office of the Accountant General has refuted claims that the Federal Government failed to pay civil servants’ December salaries. It stated that wages have been credited with most workers receiving them since last week Friday.

Bawa Mokwa, Accountant General’s spokesman

This clarification comes after opposition party PDP issued a statement criticizing the Bola Tinubu administration for being “insensitive” in not paying salaries needed by workers during the yuletide period. The PDP said it amounts to “weaponizing poverty”.

However, Accountant General’s spokesman Bawa Mokwa dismissed those allegations. “The salaries have been paid. People have started getting their salaries from last week Friday. Most people got it day before yesterday,” he affirmed.

Top civil servants in federal ministries corroborated receiving December pay on Friday but without the new wage increase. On when wage awards will be implemented, Mokwa said it will come after salaries.

The Tinubu government has faced criticism recently over delays in monthly wage payments to civil servants, a deviation from past practice.

But ruling party APC warned PDP against making unfounded claims and playing politics with workers’ welfare. APC organising secretary Nze Chidi Duru said occasional payment delays could arise from system glitches but not insensitivity.
